Muscle imbalances arise from a disparity in force or tightness between a muscle group and its antagonist group. Over time, these uneven forces create tension and pull joints out of their ideal alignment. This usually happens with athletes, as they tend to do the same activity over and over again. For instance, a Frontiers study found that badminton players have imbalanced muscle strength in knee joint flexors and extensors.
